I know I harp on this a LOT, but I think we can model and teach respect to our kids just as soon as we start communicating with them. As any parent of a crying baby will tell you, it is so frustrating, not knowing what. they. want! I’m featured this week over at Baby Sign Language.com and I hope you’ll go over and check it out!
Dr. G,
I just heard a peace on the radio about the fact that hearing babies born to deaf couples do not cry for attention. Is this true?
I have seen it with my own eyes – a baby of Deaf parents who would soundlessly wave his arms and legs when he wanted something. Babies and children are very practical!
I just read your article. My boyfriend and I would love to try teaching our baby sign language. My newborn is only 2 weeks. At how many months would you recommend to begin teaching her?
Sonia,
We usually waited til about 2 mos. But you can start as soon as she focuses on you. Each time she drinks (breastmilk or formula), take her little hand in yours and make the squeezing motion like you are milking a cow. Then give her the drink immediately. She will start to put it together!
How wonderful and neat! I’ll be doing this now. Thanks for your advise.
